Assess a live-event host against the decisions they must make on your stage, then confirm the fit through an agreed paid rehearsal. Recognition can attract interest, but it does not establish timing, pronunciation, cue discipline or recovery under your particular production conditions. A simpler community event may need a reliable local compère rather than a nationally recognised personality, especially when language familiarity and close knowledge of the participants are central to the occasion.
Africa Magic announced Bovi and Nomzamo Mbatha as AMVCA 12 hosts in April 2026. Its May 2024 announcement for IK Osakioduwa described his tenth AMVCA hosting appearance. Those records establish appointments, not a neutral comparison of competence or the terms of any booking. They are starting points for examining the job, not instructions to select a name.
Write the job before writing the shortlist
A host can be a comedian, interviewer, master of ceremonies, broadcaster or some combination. Decide which responsibilities this event actually requires. A brilliant standalone performance does not automatically include announcing unfamiliar names, managing awards procedures or bridging a technical interruption.
Begin with the run of show, meaning the document that lists the event's sequence, timing and production cues. If it does not exist, the producer must prepare it before evaluating candidates. Otherwise you are comparing personalities against a job that changes every time someone describes it.
Specify the room, audience situations, languages, broadcast or streaming arrangements and the host's authority. Can they shorten a section? Who tells them when to do so? Must they read an exact announcement? What can they improvise, and what requires approval?
For an event in Uyo, Kano or Enugu, do not assume a host's Lagos profile settles local fit. Ask about the particular language and pronunciation work required. Participants' names, professional titles and community references deserve checking with appropriate people. A host's place of birth is not a reliable substitute for that review.
Keep regional familiarity separate from audience location. A broadcast audience may extend beyond the people in the room. The host needs to make the proceedings intelligible without turning every local reference into a lecture or assuming all remote viewers share it.
Use the Cue-Recovery Review
The Cue-Recovery Review is an editorial assessment method for a live booking. It tests a candidate against planned tasks and a few disclosed categories of disruption. It is not an industry accreditation or a national ranking of hosts.
The event producer designs the review with the stage manager or broadcast lead. The candidate receives the job description, payment arrangement and general assessment areas in advance. Do not manufacture humiliation or publicly release development recordings.
Check the evidence before the rehearsal
Request examples relevant to the actual role. A full or substantial live segment is more informative about cue handling than a montage of applause. Ask the candidate to identify their contribution and the conditions under which it was recorded.
Look for transitions, not just punchlines. How does the host move from a serious recognition to a sponsor acknowledgment? Can the viewer understand who is being introduced? Does an improvised passage preserve the event's purpose?
Public footage alone may not show the instructions in the host's earpiece or an edit made after recording. Keep your observation proportionate. If you cannot determine whether a segment was live, label the uncertainty rather than crediting a recovery that may have been reconstructed.
For candidates early in their career, a capability-led media kit can organise their evidence without inventing client results. Give a small, well-prepared sample fair consideration when the job does not require extensive broadcast history.
Test pronunciation through a source record
Prepare a list of actual names, preferred titles and pronunciations supplied or confirmed by the relevant people. Give the host enough time to practise. Accuracy after appropriate preparation is a fairer test than surprise exposure to names they could have verified.
Ask the host to mark words that remain uncertain. A willingness to seek clarification is valuable. Repeatedly guessing on stage should not be treated as charismatic spontaneity.
Where several languages are involved, name who can review each passage. One reviewer may not be able to validate all language varieties or titles. Budget their work as preparation rather than expecting unpaid correction during rehearsal.
Test a shortened segment
Give the candidate a prepared introduction, then ask for a shorter version while preserving the essential name, purpose and handover. Observe what they remove first.
The task reveals whether they understand information hierarchy. Losing a decorative joke may be sensible. Losing the winner's category, required qualification or safety instruction is not merely a stylistic difference.
Test recovery without encouraging unsafe improvisation
Rehearse a missing cue or delayed speaker with the production team. The correct response may be a neutral bridge and a check with the stage manager, not an increasingly elaborate joke.
Decide in advance which subjects are out of bounds: personal information about participants, unverified claims, insulting stereotypes or sensitive details supplied for production use. Brief the host on a safe escalation route when they receive conflicting instructions.
The person selecting the host also needs to evaluate the crew. A candidate cannot demonstrate dependable recovery if no one is authorised to give a clear cue. Record production failures separately from performance failures.
A practical rehearsal specification
Illustrative scenario: an adult creative-industry awards event in Uyo plans an in-room programme and an online stream. The event, candidates and all timings below are assumed. No real host has been assessed.
| Task | Material supplied | Observable requirement | Responsible reviewer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Introduce a recipient | Verified name, category and preferred pronunciation | Accurate introduction with a clear invitation to the stage | Stage manager and name reviewer |
| Shorten an introduction | Original script and required facts | Remove optional material without losing the event's meaning | Producer |
| Bridge a technical delay | Approved neutral topics and a cue route | Maintain orientation without guessing what failed | Broadcast lead |
| Hand over to a serious speaker | Speaker's agreed description | Change tone without trivialising the subject | Editorial lead |
| Work with a co-host | Shared script and division of responsibility | Avoid competing introductions and unresolved overlaps | Director |
| Read a sponsor acknowledgment | Confirmed exact information | Deliver the approved wording without adding unsupported claims | Commissioning lead |
Use a note field for evidence, needed preparation and unresolved concerns. Do not collapse every observation into a personality score. A pronunciation gap with an available reviewer is different from unwillingness to follow a factual correction.
Suppose the original introduction has an assumed allowance of 120 seconds, reduced to 75 seconds during rehearsal. The reduction is 120 − 75 = 45 seconds. Require the host to preserve a verified name, category, reason for recognition and handover inside the revised allowance. The exercise is about task performance, not a claim that 75 seconds is an ideal introduction length.
The director notes the recorded duration and what changed. If the host needs a redesigned cue sheet, test that correction before declining the candidate. Fair assessment includes a chance to work under usable conditions.
Confirm the commercial and publication scope
The booking should identify preparation meetings, rehearsal, arrival, stage hours, possible overtime and any additional interviews or posts. Do not add a red-carpet shift or social campaign because the person is already at the venue.
Separate hosting from the right to use the person's image in later advertising. Specify permitted event promotion, broadcast, archive availability and extracts. The candidate's participation does not by itself settle music, other contributors or every proposed recut.
Use the work-versus-usage distinction when building the scope. Obtain actual proposals and qualified advice where necessary. No national celebrity-host tariff is established by this article.
Confirm who bears travel and accommodation costs, payment timing, postponement and cancellation arrangements. If payment approval will follow the event, explain the funding plan to contributors before they accept commitments. An agreed fee and money available before travel are different conditions.
For sponsored segments, assign factual and creative approval separately using the editorial decision-rights approach. Verify project-specific Nigerian advertising requirements with qualified reviewers. A polished host cannot repair an unsupported claim in the supplied script.
Make the booking decision in two weeks
- Days 1–3: the producer writes the role, run of show and authority limits. Identify names and language passages requiring review.
- Days 4–5: inspect relevant samples and obtain availability, scope and commercial proposals. Record missing evidence without inventing a result.
- Days 6–8: run the agreed paid assessment or incorporate it into a contracted preparation stage. Keep recordings under the defined access and retention arrangements.
- Days 9–10: address correctable gaps in scripts, cues and pronunciation. Repeat only the affected tasks rather than demanding another complete unpaid audition.
- Before confirming production: appoint the candidate, adjust the role or extend the search. Record the evidence and unresolved risk supporting the decision.
Allow longer when schedules or contributor permissions require it. A booking made before rehearsal can still include a preparation checkpoint and a defined recovery plan, but the contract must explain what happens if critical requirements remain unmet.
The final question is not whether the candidate is famous. It is whether they can complete this job with this team under the agreed conditions.
